Day 92: University is Still Valuable?

After searching online for more resources on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) I stopped to reconsider why I wanted more resources. A few days ago I had found what I believed to be the ‘Diamond’ of lectures on RNNs. So why did I need more than that? I had planned to thoroughly study the material presented in the lecture but somehow I lost my own direction.

Anyways, I got back to watching that lecture after failing to find a good article covering the step-by-step math functions and coding logic used to connect the neurons in a Neural Network. I wanted to know in the simplest of terms what takes place at each step of processing. I had done so with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and benefitted so I wanted to follow the same method here.

So I wanted a resource that I can break down to this extent. I can clearly understand what is happening at the baseline without the need of a framework or library I have to pass my code into.

Time was running out in the day So I figured covering something today is better than nothing. Pulled up the video from my bookmarks and within the FIRST 10 MINUTES my current question was answered and it was very clearly explained.

This made me stop and reflect. After finishing my Bachelor’s degree I was not too keen on returning to university for another degree (considering the cost).  Recently, University has understandably fallen out of favor with a lot of people. High financial cost, questionable return on investment (ROI), DEBT, and a huge opportunity cost doesn’t sound too enticing. I personally fluctuate on the spectrum of university support. I see the potential for value but also recognize that there are many areas for improvement. Today however, I am brimming with support for university.

I mean, if individuals like Andrej Karpathy are teaching, I am in support for sure! Unfortunately not all lectures are like the one I am referencing. I suppose there are other great lecturer’s out there which makes University still valuable in my eyes at least.

Anyways, I’m super excited about continuing on my progress. So, until next time.

Oh yeah, here’s the link to the lecture just in case you were interested.
